Book Rough Draft:Pre-Word
In the quiet of early dawn a pair of dragons lay around their nest of seven  precious speckled eggs. All was quiet, as it was everynight at this time. The only sounds coming from the gentle breeze rolling over them and the small tiny crickets that played a chorus of lullaby's just before the sun rose to end the dark of night. The male had just finished his watch over the nest and had retired just a little ways from the nest, his long sinous body curled up into a loose ball.
His mate loved watching him sleep like this, so peaceful and breathtakingly beautiful. With his purple-blue scales, fur falling off his mane into his face and covering his back in a show of silver. His chest the color of sapphires, even in the darkness they had a shine to them that was undeniable. The other western dragons didnt understand why she would choose an eastern as her mate, but they didn't see him as she did. His spirit had always drawn her, ever since their first meeting, ah, what a meeting. Most creatures cowered before her when she threatened to rip out their throat. He was different however, he stood there, looked her straight in the eyes, and laughed. Not a mocking laugh, for which she would have done just as she'd said, but a laugh that shot through her in a totally different way. She was dumbfounded, cocked her head to the side and tried to figure out what he found to be so amusing.
"Sorry," he said, "I've just never before been accosted by a female of the same species quite so.....spirited."
"Same species?! I am a western, proud and strong. And what of you? You are an eastern, weak and......"
"You're wrong." he retorted before she could finish.
"Excuse me?" She had said back.
"We are not different species, we have merely adapted to our environments differently."
"What do you mean? What sort of trickery are you trying to use on me to keep me from tearing you apart?" She was curious but didn't and would not fall so easily into a trap. Trying to size her opponent up she looked him up and down, slowly taking in every inch of him, when she realized he had not replied."What?"
"If we were not the same species, you would not find me so desirable to look at, " he replied, smirking ever so slightly.
"I am not attracted to the likes of you," she retorted, "I'm sizing you up."
"You did that within the first few seconds of seeing me, that was why you threatened to rip my throat out. You knew that was your best bet to win in the event of a fight," he added softly, "your not so bad yourself...for a western."
As she stood there motionless taking in what he had just said, she realized he was right. She had already sized him up and been ready to fight. So why did she feel the need to look at him again, as she was now. Shaking her head and flaring her wings in frustration, she knew then that there was some spark between them, some unseen force pulling her toward him. It wasn't some magic trick that the eastern was using to lull her into lowering her guard she knew, but her guard was coming down nonetheless. As she looked back up into his eyes, those intense blue eyes, she realized he was the most desirable thing she had ever laid eyes on.
As she came back to the present, she gazed back at him sleeping soundly and then looked at their nest lying between them and sighed contently in the cool air. Many years had passed since then, before she was able to produce a clutch. They were precious more than life itself to her, for she had always known that she would never have more than one. Seven eggs lay in there, which was a high number for any dragon, five was usually the max. Even with five hatchlings, only 2 or 3 would usually make it to adulthood. Her clutch was a blessing she had to protect and so she began her scan of the area, never leaving the nestsite, but using all her senses to know of any impeding danger.
It all happened too suddenly, neither parent was prepared for what was coming. They knew that the day would come when she would find them, but they had fervently hoped that it would be after their eggs had hatched. She had come out of nowhere, yet they knew she must have been waiting all night for the perfect time to strike their nest. It was just before the grey of early dawn that the crickets stopped chirping suddenly and the storm of fate rolled upon them.
The couple had been taking turns watching over their nest of speckled eggs just as they had been every night since they were laid. The eastern male dragon was taking his turn sleeping before the day would begin and he would have to hunt for his mate and their eggs that he knew would be hatching this day. The western female was scanning the area constantly for anything that could be dangerous to her precious nest. Her wings spreading and folding in apparent agitation. Something wasn't right. Lifting her head, neck arched gracefully, she sniffed gingerly, trying to pinpoint what was amiss. There, it was a faint foul smell on the soft breeze of early morning. That was all the warning she got before the attack.
The large black dragon came out of the woods nearby the nest. How the other dragon had escaped her notice she didn't know.  She only knew why the black one was here, for the nest of eggs ready to hatch. Before she could summon her breath or call out a warning to her mate, she was knocked back by a fierce body blow from the larger dragon. Seeing that her precious eggs were in her path, she twisted her body to land just a few feet away, her wing landing over them in a protective embrace. Although the wing membrane is not thick enough to protect the eggs, she hoped that it would buy enough time for her mate to react to the assault. These hopes were dashed as she felt her wing membrane being ripped by strong talons and heard the crack of eggshells being smashed apart. Her greatest fear was taking place and she knew it was already too late, her nest was destroyed before she had even been able to protect it.
